Industrial Manufacturing Facility Audits
GEMG personnel conducted Environmental Compliance Audits at various sites as part of an overall compliance review by corporate staff. The audits were used to evaluate compliance of each plant, identify areas of deficiencies for correction, and assess overall environmental status. GEMG personnel conducted site interviews with employees, reviewed the manufacturing process, reviewed records on site, and reviewed local, state, and federal records for compliance with applicable regulations.

UST Remediation - Folding Carton Facility
GEMG personnel provided technical consulting to this folding carton plant. GEMG personnel were assigned the project of evaluating the potential contamination resulting from inactive underground storage tanks containing RCRA-regulated materials. Other inactive tanks at the site had been used for the storage of heating oil.
GEMG personnel performed a series of initial studies including workplan development, interfacing with the State of Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and prepared a site characterization report. Site characterization activities have included multi-media sampling including soils, ground water, stream sediments, and surface water.
GEMG personnel evaluated human health exposures in a baseline risk assessment for the chemicals occurring in the local soils and ground water. GEMG personnel designed the remediation program under a combination of the state underground storage tank regulations and federal RCRA regulations. GEMG personnel provided oversight of the tank removal contractor and confirmation sampling of both soils and ground water. Materials have been profiled for either recycling or disposal under applicable regulations.
Ongoing groundwater monitoring has occurred on a semi-annual basis since 1995. Constituent levels in ground water are now below the state water quality standards. Closure status was received in October 1999 by the IDNR. The monitoring wells were abandoned in December 1999.

LUST Site Investigation, Corrective Action Plan - Former Gasoline Station
GEMG personnel prepared the Site Summary Form (SSF) for the client at a motel site that was formerly a gasoline station. Leaking Underground Storage Tanks (LUSTs) had been present on the site and removed prior to the current property ownership. Contamination was left on site as well as piping associated with the gasoline station.
A site investigation was conducted to evaluate the horizontal and vertical extent of contamination. The results of the investigation were presented to the Colorado Department of Employment and Labor, Oil Inspection Section in the Site Characterization Report (SCR). Soil and groundwater contamination above state limits were found on the property and a Corrective Action Program (CAP) was approved in the summer of 2000. CAP implementation began in November 2000.
During CAP field activities, two additional underground storage tanks were discovered. These tanks were removed from the property and destroyed according to state regulations. Contaminated soils have been removed from the property and ongoing groundwater and soil vapor monitoring activities continue.

Stormwater Management Permitting - Lumber Mills
GEMG personnel prepared stormwater management plans (SWMPs) for several DAW lumber mills in Montana, Idaho, and Washington. Later when Crown Pacific purchased DAW, GEMG personnel performed Phase I Environmental Audits at these sites. The audits were performed in accordance with ASTM Standards. GEMG personnel then conducted Phase II site investigations as necessary at these six sites plus three others in Oregon.
The Phase II investigations revealed oil, asbestos, pentachlorophenol (PCP) and creosote contamination at several sites. GEMG personnel then prepared remediation plans and provided oversight for remediation activities. The remedial action included excavation of contaminated soil and bioremediation on site. GEMG personnel personnel negotiated soil clean-up levels with state regulators on behalf of Crown Pacific. GEMG personnel also prepared submittals to and worked with regulatory agencies in four states on this project.
GEMG personnel also prepared environmental compliance audits for the sites after the acquisition so that the new owner could maintain compliance with applicable environmental regulations. These audits consisted of interviews with site personnel as well as reviews of environmental records at each site.
